Flat Suction Cup R Series and MTC Suction Cup Covers for Glass Stacking

Vacuum suction cups are widely used for lifting, transferring and positioning workpieces in automated production, material handling and processing equipment.

For smooth and relatively flat workpieces, flat suction cups provide a compact gripping solution with low internal volume and fast vacuum response. The appropriate suction cup design depends on factors such as workpiece size, surface condition, load, material, handling direction and operating environment.

Material Options for Different Operating Conditions

Suction cup material can influence sealing behavior, wear resistance, friction, temperature resistance, chemical resistance and interaction with the workpiece surface.

The Flat Suction Cup R Series is available in different material configurations, including NBR, silicone and FKM-based options depending on the application.

NBR

NBR is commonly used for general industrial vacuum handling because it provides a useful balance of mechanical properties, oil resistance, wear resistance and cost.

It can be considered for applications involving:

  • general industrial handling;
  • glass;
  • sheet metal;
  • wood and panels;
  • plastic components; and
  • other smooth workpieces.

Silicone

Silicone is commonly selected for applications requiring greater temperature resistance and flexible sealing characteristics.

Suitability depends on the actual operating temperature, workpiece condition and required mechanical properties.

FKM

FKM can be considered for applications requiring enhanced resistance to elevated temperatures, oils, fuels or certain chemicals.

Because material performance varies according to compound and formulation, the specific operating environment should always be reviewed before selection.

Replaceable Seal Design

One of the practical features of the Flat Suction Cup R Series is its replaceable sealing element.

Instead of replacing the complete suction cup assembly when the sealing element becomes worn, the seal can be removed by releasing the clamping mechanism and replacing the worn component.

This can help:

  • simplify routine maintenance;
  • reduce replacement cost;
  • shorten maintenance time;
  • reduce unnecessary replacement of the base assembly; and
  • support longer service life of the overall suction cup system.

Actual maintenance intervals depend on cycle frequency, workpiece surface, contamination, suction cup material and operating conditions.

Replaceable Seals vs. Vulcanized Suction Cups

Replaceable-seal and vulcanized suction cups each have advantages depending on the application.

A replaceable-seal design allows the sealing element to be serviced independently from the base plate, which can be useful where suction cups operate for large numbers of cycles or where sealing elements are subject to regular wear.

Vulcanized suction cups, by comparison, integrate the elastomer and supporting structure into a single assembly and may be preferred for specific compact or application-specific designs.

The appropriate design should therefore be selected according to:

  • workpiece geometry;
  • installation requirements;
  • expected wear;
  • maintenance strategy;
  • operating environment; and
  • machine configuration.

Applications of the Flat Suction Cup R Series

The R Series can be considered for a range of industrial vacuum handling applications involving smooth workpieces.

Typical applications may include:

  • flat glass handling;
  • automated glass stacking;
  • sheet metal handling;
  • panel handling;
  • production-line transfer;
  • loading and unloading systems;
  • automated material handling; and
  • vacuum lifting systems.

For glass applications in particular, both gripping reliability and surface condition should be considered during suction cup selection.

Glass stacking requires a combination of reliable vacuum gripping, stable positioning and careful surface protection.

During repeated lifting, transferring and placement, direct contact between an elastomer suction cup and the glass surface can sometimes contribute to visible contact marks, contamination or residue.

For applications where surface appearance is particularly important, a suitable flat suction cup can be combined with a protective suction cup cover.

The EUROTECH Flat Suction Cup R Series provides the vacuum gripping function, while MTC Suction Cup Coversprovide an additional protective interface between the suction cup and the workpiece.

Surface Protection During Glass Stacking

Flat glass may be repeatedly contacted, lifted, transferred and positioned during automated production and stacking processes.

Depending on the suction cup material, surface cleanliness, glass coating, contamination level and operating conditions, visible contact patterns may sometimes remain after handling.

MTC suction cup covers are designed to reduce direct contact between the elastomer suction cup and sensitive workpiece surfaces.

The permeable cover is fitted over the contact area of the suction cup, creating an intermediate layer between the suction cup and the glass while still allowing the vacuum system to operate.

This approach can help reduce:

  • direct elastomer-to-glass contact;
  • contamination transfer;
  • visible suction cup contact patterns;
  • abrasion on sensitive surfaces; and
  • additional cleaning requirements.

Actual results depend on the glass surface, suction cup condition, cover condition and handling parameters.

Combining the R Series with MTC Suction Cup Covers

When additional surface protection is required, an MTC cover can be fitted over a suitable suction cup to create a protective interface between the elastomer and the glass.

The combination can be evaluated for applications such as:

  • automated glass stacking;
  • glass loading and unloading;
  • glass transfer systems;
  • float glass handling;
  • coated glass handling;
  • laminated glass processing;
  • insulating glass production; and
  • other visually sensitive glass applications.

The purpose of the protective cover is to reduce direct surface contact. It does not replace correct suction cup selection, vacuum-system design or appropriate safety calculations.

Can MTC Suction Cup Covers Reduce Suction Marks?

A suction cup cover can help reduce direct elastomer contact with the workpiece and may reduce visible contact patterns or contamination transfer in suitable applications.

However, suction cup marks do not have a single cause.

They can also be influenced by:

  • suction cup material;
  • accumulated contamination;
  • glass coatings;
  • friction and micro-sliding;
  • sealing lip condition;
  • vacuum level;
  • contact duration;
  • acceleration and deceleration; and
  • repeated contact at the same position.

For this reason, the use of a suction cup cover should not be interpreted as a guarantee of completely mark-free handling.

Testing under representative operating conditions is recommended for visually sensitive glass.

Does an MTC Cover Affect Vacuum Performance?

Yes.

Any permeable material introduced between the suction cup and the workpiece can influence the gripping interface.

A suction cup cover may affect:

  • achievable vacuum level;
  • airflow requirements;
  • coefficient of friction;
  • resistance to sliding; and
  • available holding force.

The effect depends on the suction cup design, workpiece surface, vacuum system, cover condition and handling orientation.

This is particularly important during vertical glass handling, where friction contributes significantly to resistance against sliding.

For this reason, the complete vacuum handling system should be evaluated with the MTC cover installed under representative operating conditions.

Surface Protection and Safe Handling Should Be Considered Together

Reducing visible suction marks is useful only when reliable handling can still be maintained.

When combining a flat suction cup with a protective cover, users should verify:

  • achievable vacuum level;
  • available holding force;
  • effective suction area;
  • load orientation;
  • friction;
  • acceleration and deceleration;
  • suction cup stability;
  • glass surface condition;
  • number and arrangement of suction cups; and
  • an appropriate safety factor.

A configuration that performs adequately during horizontal lifting should not automatically be assumed to provide the same performance during vertical or dynamic handling.

Selecting the Correct Suction Cup Size

Correct suction cup sizing remains essential whether or not a protective cover is used.

Holding force depends on factors including:

  • effective suction area;
  • vacuum level;
  • workpiece weight;
  • handling orientation;
  • acceleration;
  • friction;
  • number of suction cups; and
  • required safety factor.

A Practical Combination for Surface-Sensitive Glass Handling

The Flat Suction Cup R Series provides a stable vacuum gripping solution for smooth glass surfaces, while MTC suction cup covers can provide an additional protective layer where reducing direct elastomer contact is important.

Together, they can be evaluated as part of a complete glass-handling solution where both gripping reliability and surface appearance are important.

For existing production systems, the suction cup dimensions, workpiece surface, glass type, handling orientation, vacuum level and operating conditions should be reviewed before selecting the appropriate suction cup and protective cover.

For applications where suction marks are already occurring, photographs of the existing suction cups and workpiece surface can also help identify possible causes and suitable solutions.
