Glass Conveyor Rollers in Glass Processing
Glass Conveyor Rollers in Glass Processing: Functions, Materials and Replacement
Glass conveyor rollers support the movement of glass between production stages. In a flat glass conveyor, the contact surface, roller dimensions and mounting arrangement should be reviewed together rather than treating each roller as an isolated spare part.
This guide explains what to check when evaluating glass conveyor rollers and replacement wheels, with particular attention to surface contact, maintenance and replacement selection. It concerns general glass transport components, not the qualification of rollers for furnace interiors.
The Role of Rollers in a Glass Conveyor System
A glass conveyor system includes more than the components that touch the glass. When reviewing a replacement, consider the supporting structure, shafts, drive arrangement, guides and transitions between machine sections.
First establish the roller’s function. Is it supporting the sheet, transmitting movement, or guiding its position? Then check whether the proposed replacement preserves the intended contact height, available clearance and mounting arrangement.
This system-level approach helps distinguish a component-selection question from a problem that requires attention to the surrounding equipment.

Where Are Glass Conveyor Rollers Used?
Identify the exact conveyor section before selecting a replacement. A useful application description might be a loading table, an inter-machine transfer section, a washing-machine conveyor, an inspection station or an insulating glass production line.
These descriptions are starting points for an application review, not a statement that one roller design is suitable for every station. Include whether the roller encounters water, cleaning agents, heat or a coated glass surface.
For equipment operating near a heat-treatment process, specify the actual contact temperature and location. Do not assume that a roller intended for general transfer is suitable inside a furnace or against hot glass.

Roller Materials and Glass Contact Surfaces
The structural core and outer contact surface can be made from different materials. For example, EUROTECH NKR transport rollers use a polypropylene (PP) core with a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) contact surface.
When reviewing a replacement, assess the proposed material against the actual operating conditions. Request the relevant specification for load, speed, temperature, moisture and chemical exposure rather than assuming that a material name establishes suitability.
For current NKR configurations and other available options, refer to the glass conveyor roller product page. Detailed dimensions belong in the product specification and should be confirmed for the selected configuration.
Coated Glass Requires More Than a Suitable Roller Material
Coating orientation and permitted contact are important parts of the handling procedure.
In its June 2026 Guidelines for Processing Heat-Treatable arcon Coatings, arcon instructs processors to keep the coated face away from conveyor contact. Section 9 specifically states that the coated surface must not travel directly on transport rollers.
For the products covered by that document, choosing a softer or cleaner roller is therefore not permission to place the coating against it. Follow the instructions for the actual glass product and obtain clarification from its supplier when the intended contact arrangement is uncertain.
See arcon’s processing guidelines, Sections 4, 8 and 9.
Why Conveyor Cleanliness Matters
The same arcon guidance identifies soiled washing-machine brushes, rollers and water as possible contributors to scratching during processing. It also calls for equipment contacting the coating to remain clean.
When investigating a surface-quality problem, record the first production stage at which the mark becomes visible. Note which side of the glass is affected and which equipment contacts that area. Compare those observations with the condition of the conveyor and washing equipment.
Treat these checks as an investigation, not a diagnosis from appearance alone. Repeated marks should prompt a review of the complete contact path rather than an automatic conclusion that the roller material is responsible.
Inspect Roller Condition Before Deciding on Replacement
Use the machine manufacturer’s inspection criteria and document what has changed. Useful observations include:
- Contact condition: contamination, cuts, cracks, flattened areas or missing surface material.
- Mechanical condition: looseness, deformation, restricted rotation or a change in the installed position.
- Production observations: irregular travel, recurring surface marks or repeated interventions at the same conveyor section.
Do not treat every observation as the same failure mode. Ask whether the issue requires approved cleaning, adjustment, component replacement or further investigation by the equipment supplier.
Keep photographs and maintenance records so the replacement assessment is based on the actual condition of the installation.
Maintenance Intervals Depend on the Equipment
In its article on routine maintenance of glass processing machines, Italian equipment manufacturer SCHIATTI describes cleaning, lubrication and replacement of worn components as parts of routine maintenance. It also explains that frequency depends on the component being serviced.
That guidance concerns SCHIATTI glass-processing machinery; it does not establish a universal replacement interval for glass conveyor rollers. For your conveyor, use the manufacturer’s instructions and inspection findings when setting the maintenance schedule. General references to machine lubrication are not instructions to apply lubricant to surfaces that contact the glass.
Plan physical inspection and replacement as maintenance work. Competent personnel should stop and safely isolate the equipment, control stored energy and follow the site’s safe-working procedure before accessing moving components. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s maintenance guidance provides a general reference for these precautions.
What to Measure Before Ordering a Replacement Roller
Prepare a dimensional record covering the outside diameter, contact width, overall width or hub length, bore or shaft diameter, surface profile and fixing method.
Also photograph the installed position. Show the adjacent rollers, collars, spacers and bearings so the reviewer can assess clearance and access.
Where wear is substantial, identify which dimensions were measured from the worn component and which came from an original drawing or unworn reference. Do not present an uncertain measurement as a confirmed original specification.
Use our guide to measuring a replacement glass conveyor roller to prepare the information. Matching the outside diameter alone is not sufficient evidence of interchangeability.
Conventional and Quick-Change Roller Designs
Replacement access is worth reviewing alongside dimensions and material. Check whether the existing roller must slide along the shaft and what neighbouring components would need to be removed.
EUROTECH NKR rollers use two sections assembled around the shaft and secured with two screws. Where the installation is suitable, this arrangement can reduce the disassembly needed to replace an individual roller.

Confirm shaft fit, access and clearances before selecting this approach. It does not eliminate installation checks or safe maintenance procedures, and no fixed downtime saving is assumed.

Review the Complete Replacement Requirement
Before approving an alternative, document three decisions: whether it fits mechanically, whether its contact arrangement and material suit the glass, and whether it meets the operating requirements.
Include the machine model, conveyor section, original part number where available, dimensions, photographs and the reason for replacement. Explain whether the issue is normal wear, repeated contamination, difficult access or another observed problem.
Ask the supplier to distinguish between a dimensional assessment and a configuration that has been verified in operation. A similar appearance, nominal diameter or material description is not proof of equivalent performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a glass conveyor roller the same as a glass conveyor system?
No. A roller is a component within the wider transport arrangement. A replacement assessment should also consider the supporting and driving equipment around it.
Can coated glass be placed directly on any soft roller?
Do not assume so. Follow the handling instructions for the specific coating. A roller’s material does not override restrictions on contact with the coated face.
How often should conveyor rollers be replaced?
Use the equipment manufacturer’s criteria and inspection findings. Avoid applying a fixed interval taken from another machine or component.
Can one roller be replaced without removing the complete shaft?
A split design may permit this in a suitable installation. Check the fixing method, available access and compatibility before planning the replacement.
Request a Glass Conveyor Roller Assessment
EUROTECH supplies glass conveyor rollers and supports replacement-component assessment. Send the dimensions, machine details and photographs of the existing roller and its installed position so the requirements can be reviewed.
