In wood processing and furniture industry, wooden panels are commonly applied. Frequently used wooden board materials are MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), HDF (High Density Fiberboard), OSB (Oriented Strand Board), Particle Board and Plywood. These wooden panels and nature of particle board density come with different physical characteristics, fitting into different kinds of construction or building applications.
MDF, abbreviation for Medium Density Fiberboard, is a composite product consisting of wood fibers combined with a synthetic resin or other bonding materials and pressing wood fibers together under heat and pressure. MDF has a higher density and smoother surface than normal fiberboard. As a result, MDF is ideal for processing, painting, gluing and screwing, etc. MDF comes typically with a density of 680kg m3 to 730kg m3.
HDF (High Density Fibreboard/Hardboard) is similar to MDF. It is manufactured from compressed wood fibers. HDF mostly composed of 85% natural wood, combining with additives and binders, and thus it is stronger, harder than MDF with a typical density of up to 900kg m3. HDF has a smooth surface with moisture and scratch resistant, high rigidity and load capacity.
Oriented strand board, also called OSB board, is made of cross-oriented layers of thin, rectangular wooden strips compressed and pressing wood together with waterproof heat-cured adhesives and synthetic resin at high pressure and temperature. OSB is a kindly of widely used strong engineered wood panel. Typical density of OSB is around 600kg m3 to 680kg m3.
Particle board, also known as chipboard or low-density fiberboard, is a wood product made by mixing particles or flakes of wood with a resin and forming the mixture into a sheet. Particle board is cheaper, more uniform and denser than normal wood. Particle board density is around 600kg m3 to 680kg m3.
Plywood boards are made of overlapping wood sheets glued perpendicularly together with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another. And these layers are heated and pressed together. Plywood normally comes with a density of about 650 to 700kg m3.
Veneer refers to thin slices of wood and bark which is usually thinner than 3 mm. Wood veneers are typically glued onto core panels such as wood, particle board or MDF to produce flat panels.
The wood industry consists of several areas: sawing industry, wood-based materials industry, waste wood recycling, furniture construction, woodworking or wood trade. There are various vacuum components, vacuum lifters, vacuum tube lifters and handling systems especially fit in wood products lifting application.
