How does a vacuum suction cup create gripping force?

A suction cup works by creating a pressure difference between the inside of the cup and the surrounding atmosphere.

When the suction cup is placed against a workpiece, the sealing lip creates an enclosed area. A vacuum generator or vacuum pump then removes air from this area.

The pressure inside the cup becomes lower than the atmospheric pressure outside the cup. Atmospheric pressure pushes the workpiece toward the suction cup, creating the holding force.
