Triple-Glazed IGU Production
Triple-Glazed IGU Production: Handling Conventional and Thin-Center-Pane Units
A request to “handle triple glazing” leaves an important question unanswered: what is being lifted at that moment?
It could be a conventional outer pane, a thin center pane entering the assembly line, or a completed insulating glass unit. The dimensions may be similar, but the contact surface, stiffness, mass and support conditions can be quite different. Start a handling review with the workpiece at each station, rather than the name of the finished window.

Performance targets allow different glass build-ups
Energy requirements and product certifications are separate. California’s 2025 Energy Code applies to permit applications submitted on or after 1 January 2026. ENERGY STAR Windows Version 7 is a voluntary product certification with performance criteria. Neither should be summarized as a nationwide legal requirement to manufacture every window with three panes.
The industrial consequence is a wider set of workpieces to understand. A window specification must be translated into a confirmed pane arrangement before the handling equipment can be reviewed.
Conventional triple glazing and thin-center-pane designs
With the same area, glass material and pane thickness, adding a third equal pane increases the glass-only mass by 50% compared with two panes. That comparison excludes spacers, sealants and other components. It also stops being useful when the center pane is made substantially thinner or uses a different material specification.
Thin-center-pane designs are already being commercialized. In its 4 November 2025 announcement, Alpen described using Corning’s thin glass in triple- and quadruple-pane units and reported two automated production lines. This is evidence of a particular manufacturer’s investment and product direction; it does not establish how another processor’s line should be configured.
| Design | What to establish before equipment selection |
|---|---|
| Conventional triple-glazed IGU | The actual pane thicknesses, total unit mass and the loads at each single-pane and completed-unit station. |
| Thin-center-pane IGU | The center pane’s material, thickness, dimensions, permitted contact and support arrangement, in addition to the completed unit. |
| Either design with a laminated pane | The full laminate build-up and workpiece mass; the laminated pane should not be treated as a single sheet of its nominal component thickness. |
| Either design with Low-E glass | The precise coating and face accessible to the equipment at each stage. |
Ask the glass and equipment suppliers for the restrictions that apply to the actual thin pane. A successful trial on an outer pane does not validate the center-pane station.
Map the workpiece through the line
The station names below are a planning framework, not a prescribed layout for every IGU machine. Adapt the map to the sequence used by the line manufacturer.
| Escenario | Workpiece and questions |
|---|---|
| Loading and transfer | Identify the individual pane, pick-up side, rack or conveyor support and permitted cup locations. |
| Positioning before assembly | Record how the pane is supported, aligned and released. Check whether a coating will later face a sealed cavity. |
| Assembly and sealing | Confirm which component is being moved, which elements support it and when the completed unit may be transferred. |
| Finished-unit handling | Use the entire unit’s dimensions and mass, the available gripping face and the unit supplier’s requirements for support and seal condition. |
Keep this record connected to the machine drawing. A purchase description such as “oval glass cup” is too broad to capture mounting, clearance, stroke or orientation constraints.
Check contact and movement together
Surface protection and holding performance belong in the same review. The AGC magnetron-coating guide, Version 4.5 requires appropriate contact materials for its listed products and warns that protection caps reduce the weight that suction cups can handle. It does not provide a universal derating percentage for every cup-and-cover combination.
For coated surfaces, use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact product and region. Our Low-E contact review before IGU assembly leads into the existing processing-source and surface-inspection guidance.
The movement also matters. Specify whether the pane stays horizontal or vertical, whether it pivots or rotates, and how it is accelerated and stopped. Two stations with the same workpiece mass can need different cup arrangements. A nominal vacuum reading or a component’s published force value cannot by itself validate the complete task.
The UK Health and Safety Executive’s vacuum lifting guidance is a useful reference for assessing the complete attachment and the material being lifted. Applicable local requirements and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions still need to be considered for the installation.
Decide whether the enquiry is for a component or a complete lifter
For an existing IGU line, begin with the installed cup, its mounting and the station’s workpiece. EUROTECH’s IGU production-line suction cups and replacement finder provide routes for discussing candidate components. The final configuration depends on the machine and application details.
For transfer of finished units around a factory, start with the glass vacuum lifter application. Here the frame, pad layout, vacuum supply, controls, supporting crane and required movement must be considered together. Selecting a larger individual cup is not a complete lifting-system specification.
Prepare a station-specific enquiry
- Provide the build-up and dimensions of each pane or unit handled at the station.
- Identify the glass product, coating and face available for contact.
- State the measured or supplier-confirmed mass, size range and support arrangement.
- Describe pick-up, release, orientation changes and the intended cycle.
- Include the machine model, current cup reference, mounting drawing and photographs.
- Describe any observed marks, movement or production constraint, with the point at which it occurs.
