A Replacement Glass Conveyor Roller
How to Measure a Replacement Glass Conveyor Roller
When a conveyor roller becomes worn, cut, cracked, or damaged on a glass processing line, identifying the correct replacement is not always as simple as measuring its outside diameter.
A replacement roller must match the existing conveyor mechanically while also providing suitable support and contact with the glass.
For most replacement inquiries, a few basic measurements, together with clear photos of the existing installation, are enough to begin evaluating a suitable solution.
This guide explains what information to collect before requesting a replacement glass conveyor roller.
Why Accurate Conveyor Roller Measurements Matter
Even small dimensional differences can affect how a roller fits and operates on an existing conveyor.
The replacement roller should be compatible with the existing shaft, surrounding rollers, conveyor height, mounting arrangement, and spacing.
An incorrect diameter may change the transport height. An incorrect shaft opening may prevent installation. A roller that is too wide may interfere with neighbouring components.
For this reason, replacement selection should be based on the complete roller configuration rather than on outside diameter alone.
1. Measure the Roller Outside Diameter
The first measurement is the outside diameter of the roller.
Measure across the widest point of the roller from one outer surface to the opposite side.
Where possible, use a vernier caliper rather than a ruler for better accuracy.
Record the dimension in millimetres.
Por ejemplo:
Roller outside diameter: 90 mm
EUROTECH NKR quick-change glass conveyor rollers are available in typical outside diameters from approximately 70 to 125 mm, depending on the required configuration.
However, the existing conveyor dimensions should always be checked before selecting a replacement.
2. Measure the Conveyor Shaft Diameter
The next important measurement is the shaft diameter.
This is particularly important for split or two-piece conveyor rollers because the roller must fit correctly around the existing shaft.
Measure the outside diameter of the shaft where the roller is installed.
Por ejemplo:
Shaft diameter: 25 mm
Typical NKR configurations are available for shaft diameters from approximately 20 to 30 mm.
Do not estimate this dimension from the roller opening alone if the existing roller is heavily worn or deformed. Whenever possible, measure the metal shaft directly.
3. Measure the Roller Width
The roller width is the distance from one side of the roller to the other along the shaft.
This measurement determines how much shaft space the roller occupies.
Record the complete working width of the roller, including any shoulders or structural sections that affect installation.
Por ejemplo:
Roller width: 35 mm
When replacing an existing roller, also check the available space between neighbouring rollers, spacers, bearings, collars, or other components.
4. Check the Roller Position on the Shaft
A dimensional drawing alone may not always show how the roller interacts with neighbouring components.
Take a photo showing:
- The roller installed on the shaft
- The rollers immediately beside it
- Any spacers or collars
- Bearings or support structures
- The available space around the roller
This is particularly useful when evaluating whether a two-piece quick-change roller can be installed without removing other components from the shaft.
5. Check Whether the Roller Is Flat, Crowned, or Profiled
Not every conveyor roller has the same surface geometry.
Inspect whether the roller contact surface is:
- Flat
- Slightly crowned
- Grooved
- Stepped
- Profiled
- Equipped with a special contact surface
The roller shape may influence glass tracking, contact area, and compatibility with the existing conveyor.
A side-view photograph is often the easiest way to show this detail.
6. Identify the Existing Roller Material
If known, identify the material used on the existing roller.
Glass conveyor rollers may use different core and contact materials depending on the application.
EUROTECH NKR rollers use a polypropylene (PP) inner core with a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) contact surface.
The contact surface is especially important because it is the part that directly interacts with the transported glass.
If the existing roller material is unknown, photos and application information can still help during evaluation.
7. Record the Distance Between Rollers
In some conveyor systems, roller spacing is important for supporting the glass correctly.
Measure the centre-to-centre distance between neighbouring rollers if this information may affect the replacement.
This is especially useful when handling:
- Large glass sheets
- Thin glass
- Vidrio laminado
- Finished or coated glass
- Glass moving through transfer sections
The objective is not necessarily to duplicate every dimension of the conveyor, but to provide enough information to understand how the replacement roller fits into the existing transport system.
8. Inspect the Existing Wear or Damage
The condition of the existing roller can provide useful information.
Take close-up photos if the roller shows:
- Cuts
- Surface wear
- Cracks
- Flattened areas
- Contaminación
- Deformación
- Missing sections
Understanding how the original roller failed can help determine whether the same configuration should be replaced or whether a different material or design should be considered.
9. Identify the Machine or Conveyor
If available, provide the machine manufacturer, model, production line type, and approximate machine age.
Useful information includes:
Machine manufacturer
Machine model
Conveyor section
Glass process
Original part number
An original part number is helpful but not always required.
For replacement projects, physical dimensions and installation photos can often provide more useful information than the part number alone.
10. Describe the Glass Processing Application
Finally, explain what the conveyor is doing.
Por ejemplo:
- Float glass transfer
- Laminated glass cutting
- Fabricación de vidrio aislante
- Glass washing line
- Loading or unloading
- Inspection line
- Tempering line transfer
- Procesamiento general del vidrio
Also mention the approximate glass dimensions and thickness if relevant.
Application information helps determine whether the roller is simply supporting glass or whether additional factors such as surface sensitivity, load, contamination, or frequent maintenance should be considered.
Replacement Glass Conveyor Roller Measurement Checklist
Before sending a replacement inquiry, collect the following information:
| Measurement / Information | What to Provide |
|---|---|
| Roller outside diameter | ___ mm |
| Shaft diameter | ___ mm |
| Roller width | ___ mm |
| Roller profile | Flat / Crowned / Grooved / Other |
| Existing material | If known |
| Machine manufacturer | If known |
| Machine model | If known |
| Original part number | If available |
| Aplicación | Glass transfer / cutting / IGU / other |
| Photos | Front, side and installed position |
Clear measurements and photos can significantly reduce the time required to identify a suitable replacement.
Why a Two-Piece Replacement Roller Can Simplify Maintenance
Traditional conveyor rollers may need to slide along the shaft during installation or removal.
If several components are installed on the same shaft, replacing one damaged roller can require neighbouring parts to be removed first.
EUROTECH quick-change glass conveyor rollers use a two-piece modular design.
The two roller sections can be positioned around the existing shaft and secured mechanically, allowing an individual roller to be replaced with less disassembly in suitable conveyor configurations.
This can be particularly useful when rollers are treated as wear components and require periodic replacement.

Can EUROTECH Help Identify an Existing Roller?
Sí.
If you are looking for a replacement roller for an existing glass processing machine or conveyor, send us:
- Roller outside diameter
- Shaft diameter
- Roller width
- Photos of the existing roller
- Photos showing the roller installed on the conveyor
- Machine manufacturer and model, if available
